31 HORROR FILMS TO LEAVE YOUR BONES RATTLING THIS OCTOBER- DAY 28

The Freeling family Steven, his wife Diane, and their three children Dana, Robbie, and Carol Anne live a relatively normal life in Cuesta Verde California. The normalcy of their life begins to fade away as late one night Carol Anne is found talking with the family’s television set as it shows nothing but static. Carol Anne’s odd behavior continues the following night as she again is entranced by the static on the screen. As a ghostly hand emerges from the screen the house is violently shaken by an earthquake that rattles the family. Shortly after the quake ends Carol Anne ominously states that “They’re here”. The family begins to notice supernatural phenomena occurring the next day as a glass of milk mysteriously shatters, their silverware bends itself, and furniture is rearranged and moved on its own. With the interactions being shocking but not threatening at first the family quickly begins to realize the phenomena getting more threatening. When a severe thunderstorm settles over the home the tree in the backyard seemingly comes to life and smashes through the window in the children’s room trying to drag away Robbie. While the family is occupied with saving Robbie and surviving a newly formed tornado Carol Anne is drawn into a portal found in a closet. When the family attempts to find the now missing Carol Anne all they can find is her disembodied voice coming from the television. With rampant supernatural attacks on the family and a missing child, the Freeling family begins the race to get Carol Anne back from the beyond.

Poltergeist launched in June of 1982 and was met with commercial success grossing $76,606,280 in the United States alone and was the highest-grossing horror film of the entire year. The film currently has a 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has still circulating rumors about the skeletons used on set being real human remains adding to the classic film’s legacy. According to Snopes, the special effects artist Craig Reardon testified under oath that they were real human remains. A disposition of his reads “I acquired a number of actual biological surgical skeletons is what they’re called. They’re for hanging in classrooms in study. These are actual skeletons from people.”
