31 HORROR FILMS TO LEAVE YOUR BONES RATTLING THIS OCTOBER- DAY 27

As rumors of a cursed videotape that kills whoever watches it seven days later spread two teenagers Katie and Becca discuss the alleged tape at a sleepover. Katie admits to Becca that she watched the tape with some friends the previous week. Later that night Becca discovers Katie’s body after she is killed by an unseen force. Later at Katie’s funeral her mother Ruth asks her sister Rachel to investigate the death. As Rachel looks into the odd circumstances surrounding Katie’s death she discovers that a group of her friends were also killed on the same night in bizarre accidents. Backtracking Katie and her friend group’s actions lead her to Shelter Mountain Inn where Katie and her friends watched the tape. Rachel rents the same cabin Katie did and discovers the tape inside. She watches the tape and sees disturbing imagery and shortly after the tape ends she receives a mysterious phone call that whispers “Seven Days” before hanging up. Seeking to better understand the tape Rachel reaches out to her ex-boyfriend Noah who is a video analyst. After both of them watch the tape they make a copy of the video and begin to attempt to identify some of the strange images on its film. They identify a woman in the video as Anna Morgan, a horse breeder who committed suicide off Moesko Island. As they begin to make ground with the video Rachel interrupts her son as he was watching the videotape. Now with the curse after not only her life but her son as well, Rachel finds herself in a race against time.

After weeks of odd marketing strategies ranging from obscure promotional websites that featured characters and places from the film, playing the footage of the cursed tape over late-night programming without any reference to the film accompanying it, to physically distributing VHS copies of the “cursed” film outside movie theaters The Ring was met with box office success. The Ring grossed a worldwide total of $249,348,933 and holds a 71% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s success would also open the doorway to other J-Horror remakes such as The Grudge, Dark Water, Shutter, and The Eye.
