Roger and Carolyn Perron move their family into a farmhouse located in Harrisville Rhode Island in 1971. Upon arrival the couple and their children Andrea, Nancy, Christine, Cindy, and April notice their dog Sadie refuses to enter the home and acts generally strange. While moving in the family also discovers the basement of the home has been boarded up. The family is quick to notice paranormal phenomenon occurring throughout the home every night ranging from strange bruising on Carolyn, all the clocks in the home stop at 3:07 AM every night, to the tragic discovery of Sadie being found dead one morning. After terrifying encounters with a malevolent force in the home Carolyn reaches out to demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren. After agreeing to aid the family the Warren’s show up for an initial investigation of the home and Lorraine has a psychic vision of the dark forces that haunt the Perron family, informing them that even leaving the house will not stop the haunting. The Warren’s investigation discovers that the home once belonged to a woman accused of witchcraft named Bathsheba Sherman. Bathsheba’s ritualistic worship ended with the sacrifice of her week-old baby to the devil before she committed suicide at 3:07 AM in 1863 after cursing the land before she went. This revelation terrifies the Warrens and Perron family as they both struggle to survive the supernatural entity’s onslaught of terror.
With a budget of $20 million The Conjuring was a box office success grossing a worldwide total of $319.5 million. The Conjuring wasn’t just a box office success but met with critic praise as the film has a 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. James Wan’s movement from the Saw franchise to a supernatural based horror film was executed so well with Insidious and The Conjuring that both film series would spawn multiple sequels. While the film is centered on the alleged real-life actions of Ed and Lorraine Warren there are plenty of articles and debates pointing towards the negative and fraudulent actions of the couple in reality. The film carries an air of tension and turmoil from start to finish and has cemented itself as one of the scariest films in the genre as a whole.
