An isolated cabin in the woods; A group of college students on a getaway retreat; Skulking supernatural forces a classic recipe for horror. This classic concept is completely turned on its head in this film that places the entire horror genre at the center of a meta-commentary piece with deep comedic veins and iconic cameos along with a twist that proves nothing is as it seems. This film is simply one that must be experienced blind to be fully enjoyed.
This film was the brainchild of Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon and was released in 2012 in North America. It would go on to Gross a worldwide total of $66.5 million against its $30 million production budget. The film was met with public and critic adoration and I believe Cinema Blend’s Editor-in-Chief Katey Rich’s quote “Even when the story sticks firmly in standard horror territory, this particular group of attractive kids is especially fun to spend time with… You’ll have to see it, and you really have to see it if you love horror, hate horror, or have any interest in seeing how the genre can function as a playground for something completely fresh.” Sums up the film in a nice enticing bow.
