This 1988 cult classic film centers on the plot of a serial killer turned child’s plaything when the notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray uses voodoo magic in his last moments to transfer his soul into a nearby Good Guys doll named Chucky. Inevitably this doll is taken from the torched store and later purchased by Karen Barclay for her son Andy’s birthday after she discovers a homeless man has the sought-after doll for sale. The night she gifts the doll to Andy it introduces itself as Chucky and acts as a normal doll, but later that night when Andy’s babysitter Maggie is watching him Chucky comes to life and chaos ensues. As the police suspect Andy, Karen protests the accusations but his only defense is the classic legal defense of “it wasn’t me it was the doll” he is admitted to a psychiatric hospital. Karen later discovers the doll has been active without any batteries installed, she quickly confronts the doll forcing Chucky to attack her and flee, with an immortal killer stalking the streets and her son’s life on the line playtime is officially over.
With Freddy Kruger paving the way for a slasher with comedic one-liners, it’s not shocking another series adapted the same formula. Chucky is one of the most recognizable horror icons in the modern day, and while the film itself isn’t an edge-of-the-seat ride or a movie that holds a deeper meaning to leave you pondering for days to come. Child’s play is a simple movie that reminds us that movies, even horror movies, are above all meant to be entertaining, and what other horror series can you watch the slasher finds love, and even starts a family. If you find yourself craving more of the borderline comedic horror series be sure to check out the large catalog the series has to offer: Child’s Play 2, Child’s Play 3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky, Curse of Chucky, Cult of Chucky, and even a remake of the original Child’s Play.
