Yesterday we got news that Sony has decided to no longer offer movie or tv show purchases or rentals. A blog post on Playstations website stated
At SIE, we strive to provide the best entertainment experience for PlayStation fans, and that means evolving our offerings as customer needs change. We’ve seen tremendous growth from PlayStation fans using subscription-based and ad-based entertainment streaming services on our consoles. With this shift in customer behavior, we have decided to no longer offer movie and TV purchases and rentals through PlayStation Store as of August 31, 2021.
When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4 PS5 and mobile devices. We thank our fans for their continued support, and we look forward to further enhavinging the entertainment experience on PlayStation

So the good news is that people who have already made purchases on their Playstation console will be able to still access that content. For fans of the consoles this did use this feature it is easily a tough loss, but in this generation it seems more fans are moving towards using streaming services to watch movies and shows.
I personally haven’t picked up a movie or show on my playstation since very early on in the PS4 generation, and I can’t think of anyone I know that still personally took advantage of the ability to do so. I don’t see this being a crazy large loss for Sony, and can’t imagine the backlash being crazy either!
But lets all take a moment to remember the days where we didnt have a time limit on purchasing movies on the Playstation Store.
