This was the message that I woke up to this morning. Today I didn’t need coffee because I just read that Microsoft has merged with Bethesda!
This morning Microsoft aquired ZeniMax Media and game publisher Bethesda Softworks, creators of critically acclaimed games like the
- Fallout 3
- Fallout 4
- The Elder Scrolls Online
- The Elder Scrolls Skyrim
- Prey
- Doom
Along with many more titles under their belt. The deal that brought ZeniMax and Bethesda over to Xbox is reportedly worth $7.5 billion in cash! A quote that you can find over on Bethesda’s website says
But the key point is we’re still Bethesda. We’re still working on the same games we were yesterday, made by the same studios we’ve worked with for years, and those games will be published by us.
an important thing to many will be knowing that Bethesda is still … well Bethesda. A company that many have come to love and or hate at the same time, and now being owned by a large console owner seems a bit scary to people who are not in the Xbox ecosystem.
There was no word today on if Xbox would get any exclusivity out of the deal, but with the way that the console wars have always raged on it feels like it will inevitably happen. Along with how much emphasis the Microsoft has put into their cloud gaming and Game Pass, the idea of being able to play any Bethesda game on anything really sounds amazing!
Microsoft seems to really be making strategic moves at this point, and I am excited to see what comes of it. Not only has this deal transpired a couple weeks back reports that Bungie was also in talks for being acquired, but those reports were shut down by Bungie. Even still the fact that Microsoft is keeping an eye on good studios, and games is a solid thing!
