Late To The Game: Kero Kero Bonito

Hey everyone! Welcome to what I like to call Late To The Game, a thing that will be doing from time to time. It will involve myself writing about bands and artists I was “Late to the game” on. Essentially myself checking out bands and artists that people tell me to check out but never do. Late To The Game won’t be a weekly thing, probably more so a monthly thing. That being said, the inaugural issue of LTTG features the British Indie band Kero Kero Bonito.

KKB Generation

Kero Kero Bonito is an Indie band that hails all the way from London, England. The band is consists of three members, vocalist and rapper Sarah Midori Perry or Sarah Bonito, and producers Jamie Bulled and Gus Lobban. The band has released three EPs, one mixtape, and two albums. KKB’s two albums are Bonito Generation (pictured above) and Time ‘N’ Place (pictured below). The band really doesn’t belong to a genre because every release has been different from the next. Bonito Generation is more edm driven, happy, and upbeat. While Time ‘N’ Place has more of punk rock and alternative rock elements to it, a different mindset, if you will. The band has managed to create different sounds while still having a sound that is “Kero Kero Bonito”. Sarah Bonito also raps and sings in Japanese, which is a breath of fresh air. The band is a perfect representation of a band that you would love to help cheer you on in a race or any sporting event. Kero Kero Bonito’s energy and vibes is so positive that it takes you out of your mind’s space and off into a KKB has made, musically and artistically.

KKB 3

Kero Kero Bonito is from London but don’t fret they will be embarking on a North American tour beginning in Bloomington, Indiana on April 2, 2019. The tour will continue on all April and will make a stop here in Las Vegas on April 16, 2019 at The Bunkhouse Saloon. The tour will on April 25, 2019 at Neumos in Seattle, Washington.

Kero Kero Bonito Tour

I discovered Kero Kero Bonito at Zia Records here in Las Vegas. I was looking through the K section and saw this album with a cover a very attractive Asian woman in a blue college graduation cap and gown. The woman on the cover was accented with a yellow background and said “Kero Kero Bonito”. The woman on the cover, I would later discover to be Sarah Bonito. I knew nothing about KKB, never heard a single sound or lyric in my almost 28 years of living. I bought the album based on looks alone, a thing I usually do, almost on any occasion. I then came home and checked out KKB’s album Bonito Generation and let me tell you, KKB, much like BlackPink is something that I was missing in my life without knowing it, until it lands on my lap randomly.

I enjoy everything about this band, from the different style of music on every album, to the simple but effective lyrics. Sarah Bonito’s voice is perfect, and even more perfect when she sings in Japanese. I recommend this band to anyone who simply wants to listen to easy-going, happy, and fun-filled music. My favorite KKB songs are; Waking Up, Graduation, Lipslap, Only Acting, Make Believe, and Dear Future Self. If you have found yourself in a music rut, look no further, Kero Kero Bonito are the heroes to pull you out!!!
