I have always had a healthy appetite for Japanese animation or as the cool kids call it “Anime”. Welcome to the first issue of Anime and Me, where I will be sharing and reviewing Anime that have caught my attention, be it movies or series.
In this Inaugural issue of A&M, I bring you the anime film Your Name., directed by. Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second and Voices Of A Distant Star). This film was released back in July of 2016 at the Anime Expo in Low Angeles, California. The film is centered around two teens, Mitsuha and Taki. Mitsuha is a teenage girl who lives in a small town outside the city limits of Tokyo and Taki, a teenage boy who lives in the city of Tokyo. They are opposites and come from opposite sides of the spectrum. The film takes you on a journey about these two teens who are strangers, and periodically switch bodies from time to time, a “Freaky Friday” kind of situation except the characters aren’t related. The film has won a couple awards including the Best Animated Feature from the Los Angeles Film Crictics Association.
I know, I am two years too late but I discovered this film on Amazon about a month ago, I read the description and immediately I wanted to watch it. I watched it on a cool Friday night and was hooked from the first scene on. Not only am I fan healthy fan of Anime but I love Romantic Comedies, I mean 10 Things I Hate About You is my favorite film. Your Name., in my eyes, is essentially an animated Romantic Comedy with a fantasy element to it. I loved the film so much I bought the Blu Ray and have re watched it 3 times since. The ranking of these articles will be based on 1-5 “kutsu” (Japanese for shoes), five being the perfect score, which is what this film will receive, five out of five kutsu. The film is perfect from the animation, script, and overall aesthetic, making it a perfect Anime. Give this film a watch, you will be sucked in, just like fate sucked in Mitsuha and Taki.
