Paris 2024 Olympics open to inclusion of Esports.

The past few years have been amazing for the esports community, Many of our favorite games have been televised and represented like never before. I would have never imagined I could drive down the Las Vegas strip and see fighting games I grew up playing being displayed on marquees and billboards.

As big as it is now, there are talks of bringing things to a whole new level. Tony Estanguet, co-president of the Paris Olympic bid committee, has stated that he will be holding talks with esports representatives and the IOC about gaming being included in the 2024 program.

“I don’t want to say ‘no’ from the beginning. I think it’s interesting to interact with the IOC, with them, the esports family, to better understand what the process is and why it is such a success.”

“The youth, yes they are interested in esport and this kind of thing. Let’s look at it. Let’s meet them. Let’s try if we can find some bridges.”

The inclusion of esports will in fact bridge the gap between generations and will bring in younger viewers. The DOTA 2 International alone brings in millions of viewers across multiple platforms and includes a prize pot that rivals the likes of Wimbledon.

The 2022 Asia games has already confirmed they will hold esports as an official medal event, this will hopefully open the doors for their inclusion in Paris.

Games from the esports scene that could be potentially be in the 2024 Olympics include:

  • Overwatch
  • Dota2
  • League of Legends
  • Counter Strike: Global Offensive
  • Super Smash Bros.

Will your favorite game make the cut?
